We've grown accustomed to six-figure bids for ultra-rare exotic Hermès Birkins at auction. Himalayan crocodile versions and vivid pink or red alligator pieces often command astronomical sums, especially when adorned with pavé diamond hardware. But at Christie's latest Paris sale, a milestone was reached: a non-exotic Birkin smashed the six-figure barrier.

The Record-Breaking Bag

The standout piece was a Hermès Birkin in metallic bronze chevré leather, as reported by The New York Times. Though the exact size wasn't disclosed, it appears to be a 25cm model—a sought-after compact size that's currently trendy, likely fueling the bidding war. The bag sold for $117,394, a staggering sum given that its original retail price was less than a tenth of that.

Rarity and Inspiration

The NYT noted that this Birkin was produced only in 2005, inspired by the legendary Hermès window designer Leïla Menchari. Metallic Birkins are exceptionally scarce; a Google search for this style turns up only these very photos. This scarcity arguably makes it rarer than many exotic Birkins commonly seen at high-end auctions.

Market Insights

Christie's Matthew Rubinger, senior director of luxury handbags and accessories, attributed the record to collectors' hunger for uniqueness. "It proves that the market is driven by collectors who come for something unique and different," he said, noting that this bag outperformed Himalayan Birkins and those with diamond hardware.
