Has The Dior Saddle Bag Become A New Classic?

Four and a half years ago, Dior shocked the fashion world with the news that one of its most popular bags from the early aughts was coming back. Many in the fashion world collectively rejoiced at the sight of one of the 2000s most iconic bags on the runway once again. The Dior Saddle bag was back.

An Icon, Revived

The Dior Saddle Bag was one of the most popular and sought-after bags of the 2000s, worn by the who’s who in fashion and becoming a significant part of pop culture. When the Saddle returned, fashion fans were eager to see how different it would be; in reality, it wasn’t all that different after all. The revival looked eerily similar to the original, like it had dusted itself off, taken a good shower, and rose from the dead like it hadn’t been over a decade since its relevancy ceased.

It’s no secret that fashion has been obsessed with all things vintage lately, and Dior was arguably at the forefront of this movement with the return of the iconic Saddle Bag, but what does its return really mean for those bags once deemed It, or trendy? Can the trendy bags of the past be considered new classics?

The New Classics

The idea of a classic is changing; truthfully, the line is a little blurred. However, gone are the days of the tried and true bags that have been around for decades being the only shapes to be deemed classic. When discussing fashion classics, the word can be quite objective, but a true classic is one that has a timeless appeal, feeling relevant for years to come.

While an iconic bag may come and go, remaining a big part of a certain time period, a classic bag will remain relevant for decades. Personally, I think what’s deemed classic and what’s not has become more and more of a personal thing, and my opinion is that the Oblique and leather Saddle Bags (not the seasonal iterations) have become mainstays for the brand, becoming tried and true new classics along the way.

What do you think? As It-bags of the past see returns and relevancy once again, what does this mean for their staying power? Can they be considered new classics?
