Homemade Hermès vs. The Real Thing: Can a DIY Kelly Really Compare?

An intriguing debate has been unfolding in the luxury handbag community, sparked by a recent news segment that dared to ask a bold question: can a homemade Hermès stand next to the real deal? The story originated from a televised experiment that took place in the heart of Manhattan, where a reporter visited the iconic Hermès boutique on Madison Avenue.

What made this segment particularly noteworthy was the appearance of Claude Gandrille, the store's legendary manager, who is rarely seen in media interviews. Known for his quiet demeanor and meticulous work in the back corner of the boutique, his willingness to speak on camera was a surprise to many. The fact that the crew was allowed to film inside the store at all was extraordinary, given the brand's reputation for extreme privacy and security.

The $35 Experiment

To test the waters, the segment enlisted Michelle, a self-taught artisan, to craft a Hermès Kelly bag for just $35. When he said, “This is wonderful,” it was clear he was being generous—the bag was far from the level of quality expected from Hermès.

Why Authenticity Matters

What irked us most about the segment was the anchor's suggestion that viewers could download the “blueprint” from Hermès and try making their own bags. This kind of promotion not only encourages more wannabe designers but also gives counterfeiters ideas. While the pattern may be freely available, the quality of a homemade bag is a fraction of what a true Hermès represents. The dry, cracked texture of Michelle's “crocodile” Kelly was particularly cringe-worthy.

Still, we enjoyed the video, if only for the rare chance to see Claude on screen. Vlad and I have a soft spot for him, and it was entertaining to see how he handled the situation.
